This morning I got up a little early so I could go over the lines for my Speaking class skit a few more times. But when I got to class, my partner never showed up. That was really strange, because he's really responsible and a very good student, so everyone was afraid that he had gotten into an accident on the way to school or something. Turns out he overslept--first time all year it's happened, and it was on the day of our skit! Oh well, I'm not mad at all; he's been a great partner to work with. Sensei is letting us perform it tomorrow, so it's been nice to have an extra day to review the lines!
I talked on Skype to my parents today, which was a lot of fun. We're all giddy that I'm coming home soon. I also talked to David, and he was in a really chipper mood too. Seems like everyone had a good day today. ^_^ I was having so much fun talking to people that I went back to campus too late to have a proper lunch, so I grabbed some McDonald's and quickly ate it during art history. Really rude, I know, but I was so hungry.
Today my gift from St. Nick came in the mail; it's amazing how he can find you even if you're in another country. I got some candy, good lip balm, and really good hand lotion. These things will come in handy once the cold air starts to bother me on my bike rides. My cheeks are already pink from a little bit of windburn.
I've gotten an invitation to go clubbing in Osaka with some friends on Friday. I'm not sure I want to do it, though; I rather have my heart set on karaoke. Clubbing here is pretty hardcore, too, not like going to Masque for an hour and coming home. The clubs don't open until about midnight, but the trains don't start running again until 5AM, so for those five hours you're stuck at the club. You don't get back until about 8AM. Somehow I think I would end up crabby beyond belief. It's probably really a public safety issue that I don't go! I'll think about it, anyway, but probably I'll do karaoke on Friday and go see some Arashiyama monkeys on Saturday. Sounds like a better plan than listening to deafening techno for five hours.

I've decided that Saint Nick is actually a pirate. With a diabolically curly mustache and a cutlass. He uses his pirate loot to fund his Xmas operation, pay the elves, and make toys. He probably also receives money from all the places with mall Santas.
The reason we've never heard of any of this is because
A) People who are robbed by him are ashamed and afraid to say who really did it, and fear being sent to mental wards.
B) Good PR. Even when the occasional story does get out, no one believes it, either because they think he's not real or because they think he would never do such a thing.
C) Occasional bribes.
Yeah, I have to say, if a Pirate Santa told me to hold my tongue, I think I'd listen.
About the Dirt Mall: There's this really lame mall in Springfield that all the Witt students call the Dirt Mall. It's just kinda old and dingy, like Bashford Manor was right before it closed. Plus, it's located on this little terrace , so you can see all the dirt-colored rocks behind the mall from where they carved out the terrace. And the parking lot seems to be a popular place for snow plows to dump their yucky snow in the winter. All in all, it's a very dirt-esque place, although it's not literally dirty, I suppose.
And of interest to you, some of our geology classes take field trips to the rocks behind the mall to do geology things. Whatever that might be.
Anyway, David and I discovered that it makes a great, cheap date to swing by Subway and get some takeout sandwiches, sit at the little tables in the middle of the mall, and people watch as we eat. There are some interesting characters in Springfield, I have to say. Afterward we go look at things we can't afford in the department stores. We really like the housewares department.
